Upper Big Branch Mine disaster memorial service outside PNC Bank

The Earth Quaker Action Team held a memorial service outside the PNC Bank Headquarters in Philadelphia to mourn the 29 miners that died in the tragic Upper Big Branch mine disaster on April 4, 2010 in West Virginia.
PNC Bank financially supports Massey Energy, whose subsidiary operated the mine and was in violation of over 1000 safety citations in the last 4 years. PNC Bank has recently been calling in itself a "green" bank, but besides spending millions on a new ad campaign and fancy green architecture, chooses to overlook its investment portfolio’s position as an enabler of dirty energy practices that kill ecosystems and people.

Hell’s Gate

You are looking at land now victim to criminal mining practices that not only destroy the existing Appalachian ecosystems but affect the health and safety of neighboring communities. This Mountaintop Removal mining site is operated by a subsidiary of Massey Coal, which is invested in by big national banks such as PNC Bank and Chase.

After meeting with Larry, we walk up the hill to a ridge and witness total devastation of a mountaintop. This is Hell’s Gate. This is Mountaintop Removal mining. You can see the unearthed coal dust in the air, taste it and feel it in your nostrils.
