Most kids do not understand the value of homework and will avoid it at all costs. Homework is important for developing an independent work ethic. Parents need to implement a system to guide their child and make homework an achievable goal.
As each new school year begins the parent should inquire about the current teacher’s homework policy. This lets the student know that everyone involved is aware of what will be required.
A schedule of work should be outlined and posted in the homework area. An area that is quiet but also able to be monitored by an adult. The schedule should consist of a start time, intervals of time on task and breaks. Time on task should be 15-25 minutes, depending on the student’s age. A timer is a helpful tool.
The timer is set and first study session begins. The student will be hard at work if they can tell an adult is monitoring them.
When the timer rings, a ten minute break is given. Do not allow TV or video games at this time. The break time is also timed.
Set the timer again and begin the second study session. This is the home stretch and the student will try to get it all done in this session.
A break and then a third session will rarely be needed, but use it if necessary.
